About us
In 1920 after serving with the Green Howards Ernest Oswald Race (Ossie) started his own furniture business from the downstairs of the family home in Borough Road, Middlesbrough. Determined and enthusiastic and able to capitalise on the post war boom Race for Furniture started dealing in second hand furniture, carpets, rugs and hardware.
Successful trading continued until the outbreak of war in 1939. Ossie's son, Clive, serving with the RAF would join the business in 1946, after demobilisation. Difficult as times were after the war, father and son continued to take the family business forward until 1953 when, sadly, Ossie passed away.
Clive took control of the business and over the following years Race for Furniture grew into a renowned local company with an excellent reputation for selling quality new furniture and offering good old-fashioned personal service.
In 1978 the third generation of family, grandson Iain Clive Race, joined the company after working in London. Further growth and expansion followed with major improvements made to both premises and the company vehicles. Clive retired in 1991 with Iain taking full control of the business.
In 1996 Iain Race expanded the business and opened a new store on Portrack lane called Pine warehouse. This has now become Home Interiors.
